My City School (MCS) students visited the San Francisco State University (SFSU) campus to attend a customized learning opportunity provided by the Child and Adolescent Development Department (CAD) students. Over the course of the semester, under the direction of Dr. Nadine Agosta and Founder Jennifer Larson, SFSU students worked with MCS staff and created customized learning experiences for each child that tied to the NGSS standards unit ‘The Human Impacts on Earth’. The individualized lesson plan topics included: The Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch, Water Conservation, Carbon Footprint, Water Pollution, and Deforestation. CAD students prepared individualized lessons and learning activities based on the MCS students' interests and abilities. The culmination of this project was a presentation on SFSU's campus, where MCS students got to experience, learn and return to their classroom, and re-create their own moments of peer, group instruction. Following this experiential opportunity, the CAD students conducted an observation in the MCS classroom to further pursue hands on, experiential learning methods and reflect on their own experiences and practice. SFSU students were fascinated by the immense amount of scaffolding that supports each moment in learning. Equally important to the SFSU students was the vast amount of support tools used in the classroom to deliver instruction.
Thank you SFSU! We look forward to your return next semester!

Giving Tuesday
My City School (MCS) opens its classroom and provides an opportunity for 50 San Francisco State University (SFSU) students to conduct an observation of a middle school environment. The SFSU class is an upper division applied child and adolescent development class which allows students to apply theory to real life. As a final project every semester, the SFSU students are required to create lesson plans that individualize instruction in a group setting. Previous to visiting MCS, the students would deliver the projects to their peers. However, now they are able to implement the lessons to the MCS students. The SFSU students are provided tools to incorporate into their individual instruction, observe how to provide individualized attention to each student through rotations, and learn about best practices and techniques that teach to different learning differences. Here are some of their reflections after their experience with us…
“I think this observation is very important for future teachers because it shows different approaches to learning.”
“Something that I really enjoyed was learning how well the students get multiple ways of learning, rather than your typical classroom.”
“There was so much attention placed on students being able to recognize their differences and abilities in learning styles...”
Join us next year for Giving Tuesday and see how you can join us in giving back!
