MCS students had a blast getting their exercise at Planet Granite this week, where we got to climb to new heights while working out our bodies. Climbing can be challenging, but by focusing and listening to their belaying partners, students were able to achieve their goals and ring the bell!

This last month students dove deep into the Scientific Process to complete their SF Science Fair projects. Because our entire program centers around STEAM, our curriculum is completely integrated, including our annual science fair projects. The unique approach of integrating executive function into data collection and analysis, building graphs to represent data, incorporating scientific writing in Language Arts, and learning about color and proportion in art for their presentations truly makes for deeper applied learning experience. After so much work and dedication, our students were able to place 2nd and 3rd, out of over 100 entries, in the San Francisco Science Fair this year!
SFSU's Childhood and Adolescent students team up with MCS to create customized science lessons for each students. After visiting SFSU, MCS students brought back their individualized lessons to class to show their peers. Students volunteer to help distribute food in our local community. Students help restore downtrodden pathways in Golden Gate Park to give park-goers a safe way to explore the park. We keep our school clean! Students work together to help collect leaves on Fulton Playground, and prep for creating our garden.
Ever wonder how the water cycle works? How about photosynthesis? This week, students took science into their own hands to learn about what makes up our ecosystem, and how living things work together in their natural environment.
A day in the field...making observations, collecting and logging data... Students present customized Human Impact lessons learned from SFSU CAD student's. It's estimated that (from a 2015 study) that 8 million metric tons of plastic ends up in the oceans EVERY YEAR! Let's examine how much plastic MCS uses in 7 days...counting...wow...this is A LOT! 568 pieces from 10 people...biodegradable bags anyone? See our plastic challenge for more details... Camping and kayaking in Santa Cruz, Moss Landing and a visit to Monterey Bay Aquarium... Our recent graduates successfully transitioned into college preparatory high schools of their choice and are flourishing!
One was awarded the opportunity to enroll in a select leadership course and the other earned placement on the honor roll. One Assistant Principal at Tamalpias High School, complimented one of our gradates and notes “…..you have greater executive functioning skills than most adults, and your understanding of how you learn is incredible, and it shows up in your academic self-advocacy”. During the 2016-17 school year My City School's student body and staff donated over 196 hours of community service. In that time, we collected and bagged food for over 120 local families at RDNC. We scooped, weighed, bagged, sealed and boxed rice for over 130 households in need of food in SF; We saved 27 trees in the Presidio, while removing invasive species. On the MLK shoreline we removed invasive plants, planted 100 seedlings, and collected over 70 lbs of trash from the Bay and local neighborhood.
