Last week we started our maritime unit, learning about our most important local waterway, the San Francisco Bay. We kicked off the week with the Built for Speed exhibit at the Academy of Science and learned about how the America's Cup boat design borrows from nature. The next day, while the wind was too strong for the America's Cup race, it didn't stop us. We returned to crew the J24 with a few tacks and the teamwork to ensure we did not have a man overboard drill! We began our San Francisco Timeline with historical entries that we researched at the Maritime Museum. Tommy's "Home is Where the Heart Is" tour of West Portal noted the similarities and differences from the previous weeks tour In Cole Valley and was a real hit with students. We cleared the dirty walkway from the playground up to the Randall Museum as a Community project. We wrapped up the week, sabers in hand, at our first fencing class. Current events topics discussed this week included Syria, Colorado floods, sportsmanship, and a discussion on drunk driving in response to the story of a teenager who accepted responsibility for the death of a friend.
